History & Philosophy

Crest Physical Therapy opened in 2009 and has grown to 4 locations in Monmouth County.  Each location is state-of-the art physical therapy center, clean and very patient friendly, and care is provided for patients of all ages and physical abilities in an upbeat and motivating atmosphere. Our clinical team is highly trained with specialized certifications in many physical rehabilitation services.

The Crest program is unique because of the therapists’ hands-on approach tailored to each patient’s individual set of circumstances. Our clinical team takes the time to listen to our patients’ concerns and create a customized treatment plan that focuses on their diagnosis and their goals.

  • Our approach to physical therapy treatments focuses on manual therapy for the patient with the physical therapist providing hands-on soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques, as well as, therapeutic exercise, gait and balance training, neuromuscular re-education, aquatic therapy, hand therapy, lymphatic drainage therapy, and other appropriate modalities. Our clinical team educates patients while helping them achieve results.

Debra Keating, MPT, MBA

Clinic Director

Physical Therapist

Debra received her undergraduate degree in Business Marketing and Management from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. She continued her education, receiving her Master’s in Business Administration from Duquesne University and her Master’s in Physical Therapy from Chatham University, both in Pittsburgh, PA. Debra’s research with colleagues, “Assessing the Validity of Borg’s Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries”, was published in the Neurology Report, as well as a poster presentation at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting. She is certified by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and is educated in golf swing biomechanics, fitness, and health. Early on in her career, Debra worked for Sentara Healthcare in Virginia, the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, and HealthSouth in New Jersey before joining Crest. Debra has worked with patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics presenting with various orthopedic and neurological dysfunctions. Debra received her certification in Vestibular Therapy. Additionally, she designed and implemented the Aquatic Therapy program at Crest.

Catherine Hung, DPT, CMT, OCS, CAFS

Doctor of Physical Therapy

Catherine Hung received her Undergraduate Degree in Physiotherapy from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1991, a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy in 2001, and completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy through the University of St. Augustine in 2010. She was certified as a manual therapist at the University of St. Augustine in 1998. She received her Pilates Rehab Practitioner certification through Polestar Education in 2003. She was also a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist in 2014. She is currently a fellow in Applied Functional Science through Gray Institute. With over 20 years of experience and being a Certified Manual Therapist, Catherine’s philosophy focuses on treating the source of the dysfunction based on the biomechanics and functional musculoskeletal anatomy. She is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to her patients through comprehensive examination, biomechanical analysis of the human body, manual therapy, and integrated exercise approach. Catherine specializes in orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries with a focus on rehabilitation for back injuries by incorporating manual therapy and pilates exercises. She is also one of the practicing therapists providing physical therapy for Broadway dancers and actors on-site in the theaters in NYC.

Jenny Jordan, PT, DPT

Doctor of Physical Therapy

Jenny is a graduate of the Doctorate Program of Physical Therapy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Her areas of focus include helping patients with orthopedic, neurological, and vestibular dysfunction attain their goals. In 2008, Jenny’s research with fellow colleagues was published in Physical Therapy regarding the use of the Wii in an adolescent with cerebral palsy. She has also achieved her Vestibular Therapy Certification.

Jimmy Smith, PT

Physical Therapist

Jimmy’s 25+ years of professional experience in both clinical and management includes a BS in Physical Therapy from Daemen College, Amherst, NY, and a BS in Physical Education from Hunter College, New York, NY, and a host of Physical Therapy and Emergency Medical continuing education credits. He is a licensed physical therapist in New Jersey and New York and has received such accolades as “one of the best physical therapists in Monmouth – Ocean county, NJ” – Asbury Park Press.

Karen L. Barlow Lisk, PT, ATC, HSS-SSE

Physical Therapist; Pediatric Specialist

Karen graduated from the University of Scranton and became a licensed physical therapist in 1989. For two years, she worked in the hospital setting and has primarily worked in orthopedics since. In 1992, she became a Certified Athletic Trainer following course work and internships at Montclair State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Karen’s portfolio includes pediatric and adult orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation. She spent six years of focus on pediatric physical therapy and orthopedic and neurologically impaired patients from infancy through college age. Karen is also a certified Hospital for Special Surgery Sports Safety Educator. She has been part of the Crest team since 2006.

Matt Smelas, PT, OCS, CSCS, DPT

Clinic Director

Doctor of Physical Therapy; Vestibular and Balance Specialist

Matt has been practicing physical therapy since 1996. He holds an undergraduate degree from Villanova University. He is a graduate of the UMDNJ/Kean Physical Therapy Program and received his Doctorate of Physical therapy at the University of St. Augustine in 2012. He spent 6 years working at the Kessler Institute and gained experience working with a wide variety of patient diagnoses, including the orthopedic, spinal cord, stroke, amputee, and multi-trauma. Additionally, Matt holds the OCS certification from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists and achieved his Vestibular Therapy Certification. This is the destination for a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist. He also holds the CSCS certification. This is the certified strength and conditioning specialist from the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association).

Amy Jo Taranto, PT

Physical Therapist

Amy is a licensed physical therapist with 40+ years of physical therapy experience which includes 30+ years in orthopedics specialization. Amy has a special interest in the significant role of postural awareness/habits in normal activities of daily living as well as the workspace. She embodies the true meaning of treating patients one-on-one as she has deep roots in the Navesink Area and a strong and loyal patient following because of her knowledge, skill sets, and personality.

Carla McMenamy, MPT, CHT

Physical Therapist, Certified Hand Specialist

Carla joined Crest in 2007. Carla is a graduate of UMDNJ-SHRP and Rutgers Camden, where she received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy. She specializes in running and performs gait analysis on athletes and recreational runners to improve their running forms. Carla has over a decade of experience in outpatient orthopedics. Her areas of expertise include adults, adolescents, and geriatrics therapy. Carla is also a Certified Hand Therapist. She received her Certificate of Advanced Practice in Hand & Upper Quarter Rehabilitation from Drexel University in 2014. In 2019, Carla received her Pilates certification from the Pilates Sports Center training program. She is trained in multiple areas of Pilates, including Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair.

Kimberly Glowacz, LPTA

Physical Therapist Assistant

Kim received her Associate’s degree in Applied Science for the Physical Therapist Assistant program from Union County College, along with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine from Rutgers University.  Before going back to school to become a Physical Therapist Assistant, Kim worked at Crest as a PT aide. Her professional focus has been on outpatient orthopedic care.  In 2019, she attained certification in LSVT BIG, helping those who are living with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions.  Other areas of interest include balance and gait training, pre/post/non-operative orthopedic care, and return to play care for recreational and scholastic athletes.  She plans to continue her education each year to expand and enhance her treatment approach and skills.

Dennis Waite, PT, DPT, CSCS

Doctor of Physical Therapy; Vestibular and Balance Specialist

Dennie is a 2019 graduate of the Rutgers School of Health Professions Doctor of Physical Therapy program (formerly UMDNJ). Before going back to school to earn his doctorate, Dennie worked at Crest as a PT Aide! He holds an undergraduate degree in exercise science from The College of New Jersey, where he competed at the national level in Track and Field. Dennie also has an additional certification in Strength and Conditioning. A Monmouth County native, you can frequently find Dennie running and cycling in or around one of our numerous county parks.

Jennifer Norton PT, DPT, CLT

Doctor of Physical Therapy; Lymphedema and Pelvic Floor Specialist

Jennifer graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts with a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Science in 2000 and a Master’s Degree of Science in Physical Therapy in 2002. She received her Doctorate Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in 2007. As a licensed physical therapist in New Jersey, she has been employed at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, Edison, NJ, and Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, NJ. Jennifer provides outpatient physical therapy services for patients with various diagnoses. Jennifer developed a special interest in women’s health in 2005 and pursued a specialty in this field.  She treats pelvic floor dysfunction and patients with lymphedema, as well as provides cancer rehabilitation therapy.

Toni Ann Barbieri, LPTA

Physical Therapy Assistant

Toni graduated from Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1999 receiving her Associates in Science. As a licensed physical therapy assistant, she began her career in private outpatient orthopedics working with a multitude of diagnoses including orthopedic and neurological problems. She finds her passion working with seniors with balance problems, shoulder injuries, and foot and ankle injuries. She continues to take continuing education in orthopedic rehabilitation to stay on top of the latest treatment techniques. She enjoys the one on one time she has with her patients and working to progress and challenge them during their rehabilitation process. Toni finds the variety of treating various diagnoses and ages challenging and exciting.

Robert J. Rosa, PT, DPT

Rob is a New Jersey and California licensed physical therapy specialist, and the director at the Crest Hazlet location. He graduated with honors in 2000. He has more than 20 years of diverse experience.

Amanda Borowski, PT

Physical Therapist

Amanda has always been fascinated with how the body works and how exercise, manual work, and nutrition can improve the body’s ability to heal and function properly. Amanda received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science and her Master’s of Physical Therapy from Marquette University in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Amanda has been treating orthopedics since her graduation and has primarily worked in an outpatient orthopedic setting. She firmly believes that physical therapy is a multi-pronged approach involving the musculoskeletal system, the neurological system, psychosocial attitudes, and diet. She has taken numerous continuing education courses on nutrition, orthopedics, the vestibular system, neurological pathologies, and psychosocial aspects of healing. In her spare time, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, and practicing yoga.
